What is Greenwashing?
It is a play on the term ‘Whitewashing’, meaning providing misleading information to hide and gloss over bad practices / behaviour.
The term "greenwashing" was coined in the 1980s by environmentalist Jay Westerveld to describe companies which grossly overstate the environmental or ethical benefits of their products and services.
Why are companies employing Greenwashing tactics?
Quite simply they are trying to profit on others good intentions and conscience. With more and more people becoming aware that their choices and actions are impacting the environment and their future generations.
So why do we let these companies get away with it? why do we let them profit from damaging our planet? Are we too trusting and take things at face value or are we influenced by price?
If the answer is that we are influenced by the price of products, then we don’t value our planet or the lives of our future generations. If the answer however is we are too trusting, then it’s time to ask where are products are coming from, how are they made, and what are they made of?
